Capture the stunning art and the excitement of the Venice Carnival with this large and innovative 2023 five ounce fine silver mask shaped coin.  The fully shaped coin features Venetian patterns and polished clefs refined with rich red and gold coloring. It has been issued by Samoa with a face value of $10 and an extremely low mintage of just 499 coins.  

The obverse features additional mask design elements together with the Samoa coat-of-arms, date, denomination, and 5 ounce fine silver weight.

Venetian masks date back to at least the Middle Ages, with laws regarding use of masks first enacted in the early 1300s.  It is thought that covering the face in public was a Venetian response to one of the most rigid class hierarchies in European history.  During Carnival, many of the conventions were suspended, and people could dress as they liked instead of according to the rules that were set down in law for their profession and social class.
